Day 3 in Copenhagen

First thing this morning, I went to Bo Bech Bakery to try their notorious sourdough bread. The bakery only carries this one type of bread (they close when all the loaves have sold out) and it's got the perfect combination- crispy on the outside and soft and chewy in the inside. I may or may not have bought an entire loaf and tore into it in the car for breakfast.

I guess the first thing you do to boost your ego after ravaging through a loaf of bread for breakfast is to meet up with three gorgeous ladies who make fantastic music. Giana Factory has toured with Glasvegas and two members filled in for the Raveonettes when singer Sharin took a break from tour to have a baby (Loui from Giana Factory is Sharin's younger sister).

Loui, Sofie and Lisbet took me to Sort Kaffe and Vinyl for a coffee, and then Granola for the best lunch I've had in Copenhagen so far. It started with a fresh fruit smoothie, a curry chicken salad smorrebrod (an open-face sandwich), and a dessert that I can't remember the name of, but is incredible, and a must-try if you ever visit Copenhagen. It's ice cream on top of a rhubarb jam-like concoction with toasted almonds sprinkled on top. Like the Bo Bech bread, this dessert was gone in a second.

Last stop with the girls was the Henrik Vibskov studio where we went through some pieces that will be taken on tour with them next month. Giana will be playing several shows in New York as well as in Austin for SXSW.

I'll be meeting back up with the girls on Friday for what will surely be a rather debaucherous night that will include a stop at a party taking place in an indoor pool. I'm counting down the days.

Day 2 in Copenhagen

I started today off by visiting Maria from MoonSpoon Saloon, who was just fresh off of showing at Copenhagen Fashion Week. We went through their collection for F/W 2011 which introduced some sunny inspiration (a nod to designer Sara Sachs' new residence in L.A.) and body con items that were a departure to the typically voluminous brand. I fell right in love with an Eifel Tower sweater that had UFOs on the sleeve... I just might have to put an order in for that.

MoonSpoon has dressed Bjork, Lauryn Hill, Beyonce and Lady Gaga (note the American flag get-up in the Telephone video) as well as provided the costumes for Fever Ray's Metropolis musical.

This fashion/art collective is insane and I could have easily spent hours in the showroom which also houses artist Tal R’s workspace.

Next stop, I paid the head chef of Jacobsen a visit... well, more like I made him come in on his day off to show me his coveted malt ice cream over cracked ice dessert called “Nordic Winter.”

It was pretty damn delicious. Malt ice cream with Swedish berries, meringue, pickled pear, grape oil, and malt rye crumble. Yessir.

I ended the day by going over to Rasmus from Efterklang's house where he and fellow bandmate Thomas greeted me with fresh-pressed coffee and a heartwarming look at their new film with Director Vincent Moon called An Island.

The film is beautifully made and Rasmus and Thomas shared with me their favourite scenes which included a recording with their parents in a barn as well as a visit to a school where the children also participated in an impressive performance. If you go on their website, you can still arrange to throw what they have called "private public" screenings. It's such a refreshing concept where anyone in the world can hold a public screening of the film in their own home... bringing people together to enjoy a stunning piece of work at no cost. I can't believe no one thought of this before.

Hearing what an emotional and memorable experience making this film was on this tiny little Danish island for the band was the perfect way to end my first day in Copenhagen.

Tak! Vi ses.

Day 1 in Copenhagen

Just arrived in Copenhagen to shoot the next Sharlene Vs. for MTV and it's tropical weather (5°C) compared to the frozen temps back home in Toronto. Naturally, the first thing we did was to delve head first into gluttony at Europa Cafe where I had the most amazing platter of cheeses, smoked salmon and shrimp, beef carpaccio, and cured ham.

Afterwards, we went on a cosy boat ride along the canals to get acquainted with the various areas in Copenhagen that we'll be tackling this week.

Lots of rad shit planned for the next few days: a visit to Henrik Vibskov's studio, dropping by Efterklang's home to screen and talk about their new film with Vincent Moon called An Island, checking out MoonSpoon Saloon’s latest collection, and meeting up with The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, Giana Factory, Oh No Ono, Veto, and Figurines... and of course, more eating. On the must-eat list:

Bo Bech's sourdough bread, hot dogs from Andersen's Bakery, and the original Danish Isbar (ice cream sandwich) from Lydolph.

Bring on the stretch pants!

In the Kitchen With… PS I Love You and Diamond Rings

I recently spent an evening at the home of John O (AKA Diamond Rings) and along with Paul from PS I Love You, we cooked up some vegetarian goodness. We started with John’s mom’s recipe for an addictive beet and carrot salad and then finished with Paul’s incredible veggie pasta.

Add the peeled and grated beets and carrots, julienned scallions (green onions) and chopped garlic in a bowl. Mix with olive oil and cider vinegar. Layer a serving bowl with red lettuce on the bottom and sides, and scoop the beet and carrot mixture in the centre of the bowl. Garnish with scallions.

PS I Love You’s Veggie Pasta

La Sera

I finished my "clean eats" week by cooking up the rest of all the veggies I had bought a few days ago. You would think after a week of only eating all organic fresh produce that I would have avoided the nasty cold going around but alas, it caught up with me... At least now I have a fridge full of delicious dishes because the last thing I want to do right now is get up from bed and cook.

BBQ TOFU & CREAMY KALE / STUFFED MUSHROOM CAPS
While making stuffed mushroom caps, bbq tofu stirfry, and creamy kale (recipes after the jump), I had La Sera (Vivian Girls' Katy Goodman's new project) playing. La Sera's self-titled debut album comes out February 15 and their 7" titled Devils Hearts Grow Gold is released tomorrow. V Magazine premiered the track Dedicated to the One I Love on their site and you can catch a video by Room 205 of La Sera performing some new songs below:

1/2 yellow bell pepper, chopped
1 teaspoon curry powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon red chilli flakes
1 package firm tofu, chopped into squares
Barbeque sauce
Salt & Pepper to taste

Directions:
Heat up pan and add olive oil. Then add garlic, onions, and bell peppers and sautée for 3 minutes. Add curry powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Add tofu to the saucepan and cook for 12 minutes. Drizzle barbecue sauce over tofu, cover the pan and let the tofu simmer for 15 minutes.

James Blake

James Blake was my On the Radar pick of the week for his take on Feist's Limit To Your Love... I also played his forthcoming self-titled debut album (release date: February 7, 2011) while whipping up some Clean Eats this past weekend. Maybe it was Blake's songs or just my culinary prowess (ha!) but the dishes turned out deliciously well.

The following "Clean Eats" is my first attempt to somehow detox after a super-boozey holiday.

Warm Beet and Carrot Salad with Creamy Dill / Three Taste "Noodles"
This is probably the only type of "cleanse" I would ever do because you can actually eat- it's not one of those ridiculous 'cayenne pepper and maple syrup water' as meals for 2 weeks type of nonsense. It's basically a ton of fresh organic vegetables, grains and nuts done up in a really creative and flavourful way. But no sugar, no flour, no dairy... no burgers. I'm doing it for 5 days and currently on Day 3. Wish me luck (it's the damn burgers that always get me).

RECIPES:

THREE TASTE "NOODLES" from Jenny Nelson's Clean Eats
(I took out the anchovy fillets and amino acids out of my version)

VEGETABLE WEDGES WITH CREAMY DILL AND CASHEW SAUCE
from Jenny Nelson's Clean Eats
(I didn't have cashew butter so I used almond butter instead)

Tennis

So I lied and I ended up going through Cape Dory by Tennis (release date: January 18, 2011) instead of the Vaccines.

Here's an excerpt of their bio from their label, Fat Possum's site:
Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore met while studying philosophy in college. The two agreed that upon graduating they would sell their collective possessions and leave behind their lives in Denver. They planned to buy a small sailboat and spend the next year living aboard and traveling exclusively under sail...

Smith Westerns

This week marked the return to work which means tackling the massive mound of new music that is piling on my desk and inside my computer. I’m not a fan of telling you what songs sound like (I’d rather you check it out for yourself), but I promise to only post stuff I think you’ll dig, obviously.

Today I listened to Smith Westerns' new album Dye It Blonde (release date: January 18, 2011) and you can watch their first music video for "Weekend" from the album below:

Tomorrow, I'm gonna check out the Vaccines.

Goodbye 2010

So, clearly, I'm way better at reading blogs than I am at writing them. Let's see if I get any better in 2011. I promise more travel and food tips, all inspired by the best music there is, of course.
Happy holidays and see you in the new year xx
P.S. here's a Christmas card my friend Keex sent me of her cat GG during our almost 3-hr iChat goss sesh  <3

Austin City Limits

You may be asking yourself, "Sharlene's in Austin again?" Yes, friends, this fine city of tacos, bbq and live music has quickly become my second home. Bringing me here for a fifth time is the end of the festival run (for me, anyway), Austin City Limits. However, it wasn't just the stellar line-up at ACL this year that convinced me to say yes to this trip but also the truly amazing people and incredible friends I've made in this city that will continue to bring me back.

with our MTV camera stud Jason

with our MTV camera stud Jason

I started my trip with said incredible friends, including this lovely lady who you might recall made an appearance in SHARLENE VS. AUSTIN as Ramesh Srivastava's friend.

Afsaneh is my go-to girl to continually geek out on style with. She's opening up a designer vintage site that I can't wait to tell you all about at the end of the year. It was my birthday the day before I arrived in the ATX, and Afsaneh welcomed me with the best present a girl could ask for... a pair of vintage YSL leather shorts.

Even though I arrived on zero sleep, I was so excited to catch-up with Afsaneh and Ramesh, as well as the gorgeous Dorr sisters whom I met on our last trip to New York. Needless to say we had a really fun (and late) time reuniting and I know, I've said this before (and I still can't say much about it now), but you have got to keep your ears open for these two incredible projects that Ramesh is working on. He's such a talent and you can read up on his musings here.

Walking to Zilker Park

Walking to Zilker Park

After getting a day to settle into Austin, I embarked on the intense 3-day musical festivus that is Austin City Limits. Here are my highlights (note: live photos were taken by the festival):

Vampire Weekend are always a joy to interview. Prior to our slot, Chris, the drummer, showed off his "situation" to our sisters at VH1 and for our interview, we chatted about how to keep things light 'n fun when in the middle of an intense and long tour and killer ideas for a possible next music video. Here's one of the rad new backdrops (designed by their friend and Ezra's cousin, Asher) that VW is showcasing on this leg of the tour:

Wayne Coyne from The Flaming Lips to this day is still my top 5 interview subjects. Hands down. The challenge is to focus because let's be honest, we could chat about chasing worms and life philosophies for hours and hours (we limited the worm chasing to 5 minutes for the purposes of this interview which he twitvid'd).

Devendra Banhart was so stoked to be interviewed by us that he ran out in the middle of the shoot to find his iPhone and got about 10 photos taken of us with the MTV News mic flash. We spent our interview talking about R Kelly, grandma chic and how to make "a sad song fun". I never, ever swoon in interviews but there might have been some swooning done here... just a tad.

Matt and Kim's relentless positivity and happy glow never ceases to amaze me. I dare you not to spend 5 seconds with this infectiously fun duo and feel like you can conquer anything in life. We chatted about their new album Sidewalks, which is due out next month and their new motto, "WHAT WOULD MATT & KIM DO?"

Watching the Strokes play during Day 1 of ACL was a personal favorite highlight. The last time I saw them play live was back in 2006 at another festival (V Fest in Toronto). You may have heard me talk about the first time I saw them live in October 2001- also known as their first live show in Toronto, which was also a free concert held at The Horseshoe Tavern with Adam Green, Mooney Suzuki, and Pete Yorn. I lined up for 9 hours, sick with strep throat, and got in for the last song. Fast forward to 2010, no line-ups and no strep throat, just my pals and I dancing and singing very loudly by the stage to their 60min ACL set. Life's funny like that.

The Eagles headlined ACL and drew the biggest crowd from the past three days. It was crazy seeing most of the performers that day grooving along to Hotel California. I grew up with my dad playing The Eagles along with bands like Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd, so I gave my dear pops a call during the set, but instead of an affectionate bonding moment, I got my dad yelling on the other end: "WHERE ARE YOU? WHY IS IT SO LOUD? ARE YOU COMING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING??"

Here's some more pix of the bands I interviewed during the weekend:

24 hours in London Pt. 3

LEILA'S SHOP

LEILA'S SHOP

With 24 hours winding down, it was time for a tea break at Leila's Shop. I read that Leila imports nougat freshly made from Iran and was dying to try it... apparently, I wasn't the only one and it was sold out.

Right now, the work of portrait artist Alice Neel is running at the Whitechapel Gallery. A highlight was a striking portrait of Andy Warhol after his attempted assassination.

MENU AT BISTROTHEQUE

MENU AT BISTROTHEQUE

After the gallery, we ate at Bistrotheque and I brought over some of their incredible chocolate raspberry cake for my friend Keex (AKA Akiko Matsuura). Keex is the drummer for THE BIG PINK, fronts COMANECHI and PRE. In the past year, we've become really good friends and always have a major catch-up session whenever we're in each other's city. Keex is about to go on tour with Comanechi, so I was really happy I got to catch her while I was in London and do a crazy nightlife piece with her.

We started at her house in Dalston and had a lil pre-drink before heading out. Below is a pic of GG, her kitten who's got an extra-long body and apparently loves to dance.

Later, we headed to Haggerston Pub by jumping on the 149 bus. At Haggerston, it was a friend's birthday in the back outdoor patio. I really liked the chill vibe at this place.

Alex from A Grave With No Name and Keong

Alex from A Grave With No Name and Keong

After Haggerston, we walked over to Alibi and needless to say, there was a loving share of shots to be had.

At this point, we were dying for some food and Keex guided us to Tava for some lahmacun (a Turkish pizza). They were only £1.50 and so very delicious.

Since we were almost back at Keex's and couldn't physically drink anymore, we went back and played more old school Super Mario and Duck Hunt while Keex made some pasta sautéed with cherry tomatoes (that she made Alex go run out and get), garlic and red chillies. That's how we roll, y'all.

24 hours in London Pt. 2

One of the things I love the most about East London is that every time I'm there I always stumble upon a new shop or gallery that I've never seen before. Every street has a little something just waiting to be discovered. Whilst walking around Commercial Street, I stopped by the Pictures on Walls gallery. It's such a rad space and houses some original Banksy pieces.

Next stop, I visit my friend Akiko (she plays drums for the Big Pink and fronts Comanechi and Pre) for some night time shenanigans.

24 hours in London Pt. 1

Ok, first off, I need to obsess over the hotel that I'm staying at, The Old Town Hall Hotel, in Bethnal Green. Give me gigantic ceilings, beautiful mid century modern furniture and L'Occitane products in the bath and I'm totally won over. It only opened three months ago and houses the critically acclaimed Viajante restaurant.

The story for my trip in London is a segment called "24 hours in East London." If you only have a day, there's really no where else in London you need to go.

I suggest you start at the Old Truman Brewery and Bricklane. Here, you'll find one of the greatest vintage shops around for bags and boots, the best pizza, the legendary Rough Trade East record shop and tons of independent galleries.

Story Deli, Pumpkin and Chorizo Pizza

This time, I came by on a weekday, but if you want the full experience, come on a Sunday where Bricklane is lined with stalls and the indoor Up Market has tons of new designers selling handmade goodies. I got my favourite silver spiral ring here last time I came through.

You will also find every Indian curry house available to man here.

Day 4: Bestival

For my last day in the Isle of Wight, we drove through and around the entire island. From Ryde to West Isle to the Needles. I would totally recommend renting a car and taking a day road trip here. It's really easy to drive around and everywhere you make a pitstop has its own unique old charm.

CARISBROOKE CASTLE

After being a tourist for the day, we drove back to Bestival one last time and met up with Caribou. Dan and I scoured the festival grounds for some tea and talked about the incredible year he's had with his most recent album, Swim. Dan is about to embark on an extensive tour where you can get the rare double vinyl of his ATP performance with a 15-piece band performing Flaming Lips songs.

Up next, London! xx

Day 3: Bestival

Day 3 started off in the Bestival fantasy-themed press tent where we gulped down more Red Bull's than humanely allowed and talked to a bunch of new artists including Everything Everything and Eliza Doolittle.

In the afternoon, I met up with Oxford's proud folkers Stornoway who have been tagged as the next Mumford & Sons. I think that's hilarious because I interviewed Mumford last year in London for an On the Radar profile and already there's new bands being compared to them. What I can vouch for is that both bands share a similar sharp wit and dead panned humour that I'm a major sucker for.

Before our interview, we set up in the adventure park for an acoustic version of their single, Zorbing. 1 take and it was beautiful. We then made our way to, what we joked as, the biggest ride in all of Great Britain- it was a kid's swing boat. The gentlemen that the Stornoway boys are brought along pitchers of Pimm's. After several near vomit attacks during the interview (drinking Pimm's while the boat slowly sways up and down for 20 minutes is probably not recommended), we escaped the boat ride unharmed.

Later in the evening, I went by to see Brooklyn's Here We Go Magic and took Mike and Peter to Blacksheep for a lil brew tasting. I'm not a huge beer drinker, so I wasn't sure how good of an evaluator of brews I was going to be. The lovely manager at Blacksheep, Annie, was super helpful and took us through Isle of Wight's most popular brews, which we all tasted/knocked back. The three of us decided that Goddard's Fuggle Dee Dum was the clear winner. There's just something about Isle of Wight's sincere quaintness and retro vibe that you can't help but fall in love with.

The Minghella's

As stoked as I was to meet up with all the rad bands in town for Bestival, it was meeting Edward and Gloria Minghella that was on the top of my list. I'm a huge fan of their late son, the supremely talented director and writer, Anthony Minghella, and am also a big lover of ice cream, which Edward and Gloria have made a business out of.

After meeting the Minghella's at their factory, they took me to Gossips cafe which is right by the pier and is such a gorgeous setting for a Sunday brunch. Coming from the city, it was refreshing to breathe the clean air and feel the cool breeze of the autumn approaching. I also had the honour of selecting a new ice cream flavour called "the Enchanted Manor". After trying several flavours, I chose raspberry & champagne as the winner. I became obsessed with the ice cream (seriously, the richest and freshest you'll ever have) and ended up going back and trying more.

I was beyond won over by the resilience and hospitality from the Minghella clan. Hearing Gloria reminisce about Anthony's dedication, talent and generosity was truly inspiring and really does help you put life into perspective. I was touched to have been able to have the opportunity to spend the day with Gloria and Edward.

Much love and thanks to the Minghella's! xx

Day 1/2: Bestival

Bestival has been running on the Isle of Wight since 2004 and this year, taking place at Robin Hill park, saw ticket sales of over 50,000... that's like almost half the population of the entire island. Spanning 4 days with an eclectic line-up of artists from the Flaming Lips to Dizzee Rascal to Mumford & Sons, it was the perfect chance for me to come over and "VS." the island for the first time. My only point of reference of the Isle of Wight was my childhood pen pal who lived here and wrote to me that parts of the island was sinking into the water. I thought that was super rad back then, and let's be honest, I'm still intrigued by the fact today.

For my first Bestival day (which was technically Day 2 of the fest), I met fellow Vancouverites Amber and Steve from Black Mountain at the East Cowes ferry docks and we drove to Dimbola Lodge in West Isle. It's a bit of a trek, but damn, is it worth it.

At first, it looks like you're just driving by a beautiful estate... which Black Mountain and I had no problem dropping by and having a coffee at. We knew there was a statue of Jimi Hendrix outside the lodge but we had no idea the incredible art that was waiting for us inside.

As soon as we got out of the van, we were met by photographer Charles Everest in the parking lot. Everest has a photo exhibit of candid images captured from the Isle of Wight festival in the 70s, including the very last photo ever taken of Jimi Hendrix. Who knew that this existed in a far off lodge on an island in the South of England? We felt like we had stumbled upon a huge secret and became deliriously in awe.

After being blown away by Everest's striking photographs, we discovered a whole floor of original paintings, sketches and drawings by Miles Davis, and a room full of Patti Smith's photography. We could have seriously stayed at Dimbola the whole day, but alas, Bestival was beckoning us and we made our way to Robin Hill park.

I'm always impressed by festival goers in the UK and their ability to love and embrace the enormous amount of mud. Take the picture below, this girl couldn't care less about spending the rest of the weekend barefoot in the mud. For me? My worst nightmare.

I, on the other hand, clinged tightly to my wellies all weekend.

Saturday night at Bestival was closed by Hot Chip on the mainstage who thanked everyone for coming out to the last of the summer festivals. Hot Chip never cease to amaze me live- they always put on an energetic set full of positive vibes. A great night to top off my first Bestival experience.

Holy Fuck that's a good stir-fry!

Holy Fuck's Brian Borcherdt not only knows how to create music magic in the studio, but he's also quite the pro in the kitchen. I dropped by Brian's home earlier this year for a taping of In the Kitchen With... Holy F*ck, and we improv'd some badass veggie stir-fry together.

Here's the recipe:

1 package of egg noodles
1 cup of mushrooms
1 bunch of Swiss chard
1 bunch of kale
2 jalapeno peppers
4 garlic cloves
1 slice of ginger
1 package of firm tofu
3 tbsp of olive oil
2 tbsp flax seeds
Soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, salt, black pepper, garam masala (or whatever spices you like)

Bring a large pot of cold water to a boil and add the egg noodles. Let it boil until al dente.

While the pasta is cooking, finely dice all the garlic and add to a cast iron pan that has been set on high heat with olive oil. Simmer for 1 minute. Add sliced ginger and jalapeno peppers. Chop the firm tofu into small cubes, add to the garlic, and pan fry until golden. Then add the sliced mushroom and chopped Swiss chard and kale. Sprinkle some soya sauce, apple cider vinegar, salt, ground black pepper, and masala spice to taste. Sautée for about 5 minutes.

By the time the noodles are al dente, the veggie stir-fry will be done. Strain the noodles and add to the veggies, toss, and serve. So simple, easy, and healthy.
